Single phase
Typically up to a 5kW inverter without a network application, supports a panel array up to 6.6kW, the most common residential setup in Australia. Larger sizes may be possible by application.
Three phase
Up to 5kW per phase, so up to 15kW of inverter capacity total without a formal application in most areas. Three phase inverters also distribute solar export more evenly, reducing the chance of hitting per-phase export limits.
What it means for batteries
Most batteries work on either connection. On three phase, some configurations can supply backup across all three phases simultaneously, useful if high-draw appliances are spread across phases.
