Virtual power plants explained: what they are, how they work, and whether to join one

What a VPP actually does

On a hot afternoon when everyone's air-conditioning kicks in, the grid operator sends a signal to thousands of home batteries that release a small burst of stored energy at once. Together they stabilise the grid without firing up a gas peaker plant. You get a payment, the grid gets the energy it needs.

VPP-capable vs VPP-enrolled

VPP-capable means the battery can technically connect if you choose to. Joining is your decision. Most quality batteries from reputable manufacturers already meet this requirement, confirm with your installer before signing.

What you give up

  • Partial control during events, the operator sets dispatch. Most programs hold a minimum reserve so you're not left without backup.
  • Possible retailer switch or 2 to 5 year lock-in with exit fees.
  • Additional battery cycling, modest if dispatch is conservative, meaningful over 10+ years if aggressive.

Questions to ask any VPP provider

  • What's the minimum battery reserve during events? (Look for 20% or more.)
  • How many dispatch events per year on average?
  • Do I have to switch retailers?
  • What's the contract term and exit fee?
  • Are credits cash or bill credits only?
  • Is my specific battery model supported?
